Annual session 2004
Item 8: United Nations Volunteers Report of the Administrator

Statement by

Mrs. Gabriela Tanjala,
Second Secretary

GENEVE, June 15th 2004

Mr. President,
Ladies and gentlemen,

We thank and congratulate the Administrator and interim Executive Coordinator for the Report regarding the United Nations Volunteers activities during 2002 - 2003.

On behalf of Romania, I would like to express our appreciation for the work and efforts of the UNV programme in promoting volunteer movement as important contribution to the welfare of societies.

Romania welcomes the central role of UNV, in collaborating with other stakeholders, in enhancing the recognition, facilitation, networking and promotion of volunteerism, and recognizes the importance of the contribution of volunteerism to development.

We would also like to welcome the initiatives taken to extend opportunities for all citizens to engage in volunteering for development by expanding the forms of affiliation with the UNV Programme. Civic engagement through voluntary action is one of the principal manifestations of trust and solidarity within and among communities.

Romania recognizes the achievements of the UNV programme in articulating and advocating the importance of the contributions of volunteerism, in particular the vital role it plays in the achievement of the MDGs.

We are also pleased to note that UNV is acting as the secretariat for the Report of the Secretary-General to the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 being the focal point on follow-up to International Year of Volunteers and praise UNV for its role in initiating new types of volunteer activity , strengthening the capacity of national and local volunteer organizations, and making the case in international forums for the importance of volunteerism.

In this respect, I would like to reconfirm Romania's support for UNV work to demonstrate the role of volunteerism and volunteer contribution to development.

Thank you.
